Sonos launches Amp, adds new APIs for third-party apps

Sonos has introduced a new developments for powering and controlling its speaker products. First, it debuted a new Sonos Amp, a home audio hub that can power traditional wired speakers while integrating with Sonos’ wireless devices. It supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 and more than 100 streaming services. When connected to devices with Amazon Alexa enabled, the Amp can also be controlled by voice command. The product will launch globally in February 2019 for $599.

In addition, the company announced that it will launch an open developer platform in early September. Sonos will also add a new set of control APIs to further streamline how its products can integrate into smart home setups. The move could mean much easier connections between Sonos devices and third-party software apps.

“Sonos has been a platform company since day one, with a goal of giving customers unparalleled freedom of choice, starting with an open approach to music services and expanding to support dozens of additional content and control partners, including multiple voice services,” the company wrote in its press release with the latest updates.
