Rogers freezes the puck in dramatic Canadian station shutdown

In a startling restructuring action that surprised several thousand listeners, Canadian radio network Rogers Sports & Media shut off six radio stations. That action left 230 employees jobless. The affected listening areas include Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, and Kitchener.

Rogers is cutting 230 positions across the division as it announces it’s shuttering the six stations. We learn that about 80 of the job cuts are directly tied to those stations; the rest come from elsewhere in the company including back-end operations television, and other media.

On the audience side of things, some sports fans will follow their teams on different Rogers stations, or will lose any access to live coverage of certain teams. Hockey coverage is particularly impacted.

Remaining are 44 unaffected music and format stations owned by Rogers across Canada.

Public reaction to the disrupted programming is predictably unhappy, and extends to political outcry from provincial leaders. Our quick scan of social media reveals reactions ranging from disappointment to rage.
