HeartMedia has released results of a consumer study focused on a finally defined American consumer group: Bicultural Latinos. By definition, this group identifies as equally American and Hispanic. The importance of audio is emphasized, and radio is especially significant: Broadcast reaches nine of ten Latinos monthly. (That metric comes from Nielsen.) While one in three prefer Spanish language music and radio, almost 90 percent of respondents typically consume English language content. There is widespread acceptance, as 65 percent report no bias toward one language. Podcasts are popular in this cohort, gaining 63% weekly consumption (compared to a whopping 98% for music).
The Podcast Academy (TPA) has announced two recipients of special awards as part of the annual Ambies Awards. Kara Swisher receives the Governors Award, recognizing meaningful contribution to the growth of podcasting. Swisher’s podcast, On with Kara Swisher, reaches 326,000 subscribers and the twice-a-week show has produced nearly 800 videos. The TPA will also posthumously honor Reggie Osse’ more familiarly known as Combat Jack, with the Impact Award, celebrating his lasting influence on cultural storytelling and the evolution of podcasting. The Ambies ceremony takes place tonight in Brooklyn, hosted by comedian and writer Wyatt Cenac. An Ambies billboard is running in Times Square, NYC.
