Podcasts vs radio: Time spent metrics favor both by age (Edison Research)

In today’s edition of the Weekly Insights feature from Edison Research, we learn how four different age categories spend time listening to AM/FM radio and podcasts.

The most apparent takeaway shows the 13-24 cohort preferring podcast listening by more than two to one. A reverse trend belongs to the 55+ population, which favors AM’FM Radio by an even wider margin. (See the graphic below.)

Edison editorializes the 13-24 group: “The dominance of podcast listening among younger age cohorts can certainly be attributed to their preference for on-demand content that also includes visual elements, qualities specific to podcasts and not radio.”

Speaking on behalf of AM/FM, Edison observes the allure of sports, NPR, news & entertainment talk shows, and political talk.

Edison observes that this study does not encompass the entire audio universe, calling out SiriusXM and audiobooks.
