Sonos and Ikea unveil two speakers for August launch

Sonos has partnered with Ikea for a line of smart home products. The collection, dubbed Symfonisk, will be available starting in August 2019. The first is a bookshelf speaker with a rectangular design that can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The second product is a table lamp that is also equipped with a wireless speaker as its base. Both products can be controlled through the Sonos app, and can be linked with other Sonos devices for stereo and surround sound setups.

The bookshelf speaker will retail for $99 and the table lamp for $179. Both are due to start shipping in August 2019.

The pairing of Sonos, known as a high-end company appealing to audiophiles, with Ikea’s inexpensive, design-for-all approach is an interesting one. With the popularity of smaller and cheaper smart speakers such as the Google Home Mini and Amazon Echo Dot, this may be Sonos’ pitch to that buyer segment. According to The Verge, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said that the audio performance in the lamp will be similar to or a step or two below the Sonos One smart speaker.
