Slate hires new editor in chief

Slate has appointed a new editor in chief to oversee both its text and audio operations. Jared Hohlt will take over at the helm of the publication. He previously spent 18 years with New York magazine and held multiple roles over those nearly two decades. He will start at Slate on April 1, filling the vacancy left by Julia Turner, who departed the EIC role in October for a post at the Los Angeles Times.

“Narrative is something I adore, and that can be applied differently in different places,” Hohlt said. “But as we see with podcasts, there’s a whole other way to do narrative. There are incredible stories being told in that medium, and that is super exciting to me.”

Hohlt also said he plans to increase politics and news coverage at Slate ahead of the 2020 election cycle.
