Show Shouts: iHeart and HowStuffWorks, USA Today’s augmented reality, Spotify’s covers

Show Shouts highlights noteworthy new and upcoming podcasts from across the vast and fast-growing category.

Unobscured: Shortly after announcing their acquisition, iHeartRadio and HowStuffWorks have unveiled their first new podcast. Unobscured is an exploration of lesser-known history hosted by podcasting veteran Aaron Mahnke. The narrative documentary series will first examine stories from the Salem Witch Trials, featuring interviews with leading experts on this moment in U.S. history. The show debuts on October 3.

The City: USA Today is trying a multimedia approach with its new podcast. The City won WNYC’s 2015 Podcast Accelerator competition, and now USA Today is supporting the show with augmented reality, which it hopes will serve the dual purpose of engaging listeners and driving revenue. The long-form podcast shares how corruption and power impact the landscape of modern metropolises; season one is about Chicago in the 1990s.

Under Cover: Spotify’s latest show announcement is all about cover songs. Under Cover interviews artists about their choices and creative process in performing a cover for their Spotify Single sessions. Artists such as Def Leppard, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, and Lake Street Dive are interviewed for this show, which is already posting episodes.
