Quick Hits: Two experts on why radio isn’t dead

Brief news items and worthy reads from around the web:

Radio as adaptation: Raul Alarcon, Jr., head of the Spanish Broadcasting System, participated in the Billboard Latin Music Conference. His interview covered the role of radio and the launch of his the radio major’s new app. “Have technology be your friend. Do not be afraid,” Alarcon advised. “If it’s going to disrupt my business, then I’m going to disrupt my business. Let us, the company, use this technology.”

Radio as technical necessity: Joan Warner, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia, has long been a vocal supporter of radio and its importance now and in the future. She spoke at the media launch of the LG Stylus smartphone with built-in DAB+ and continued to tout its role as a complement to streaming. “We frequently face the assumption that streaming will eventually or even now is replacing broadcast radio as the main method of listening to radio,” Warner said. “Using streaming over a mobile network to reach an audience of hundreds of thousands of people – all listening to the same program at the same time in good quality – is not practical, nor technically possible.”
