There are many thousands of genre pureplay Internet radio stations. Much rarer are pureplays that fearlessly cross genres with great sensibility and taste. The best examples of that sort of station build loyalty quickly for their great and unpredictable music curation that creates a surprising and satisfying experience. They are a testament to the freedom of Internet radio, not unlike college broadcast radio.
Woofer Radio is a station like that. (Tagline: “Music to the Fullest.”) We found the station late at night, during the Nightcruise program. We heard some gently grooving electronica. In another session, we caught the Rare Grooves program, featuring vintage soul and funk. Drive Time streams three decades of pop and rock. the Funk & Soul Show is what it is, and jazzy Lunch is likewise self-descriptive. The fully programmed schedule stretches to Reggae, Afrobeat, and Rap.
The simple website is simple, clean, and doesn’t offer much in the way of distraction, or information. We could not find a “recently played” list. But the pop-up player is one of the easiest (and again, simplest) we have ever encountered. Woofer Radio is about the music, and only the music.
