Pandora and YouTube lead time spent streaming

musicwatch-audiocensus-q2-2016A new survey from MusicWatch broke out the most popular streaming services by hours listened. Its Audiocensus found that Pandora and YouTube dominate weekly time spent listening, each with a 27% share of hours in the second quarter of 2016.

The chart is most compelling for its breakdown of premium and free hours. Although Pandora’s free tier has a 27% share, the company’s Pandora One offering had just 3%. Spotify’s balance was much closer to even, with an 11% share for the free access and 7% for premium. However, Pandora could start to see shifts with the launch of a revised Pandora One mid-priced service. “Pandora’s strength in the market represents a major opportunity to migrate listeners to new tiers of services, including on-demand and revised lower-price offerings,” said Russ Crupnick, MusicWatch managing partner.

MusicWatch makes its calculations based on the size of audience for each service and the time users spent listening to it in an average week.

Sports fans are avid audio users … and big spenders. Advertisers take note. (SiriusXM)

SiriusXM has released a preview of The Sports Audio Report, produced in collaboration with GroupM and Edison Research. For a preview, there is a surprising amount of information. Audio shines in this report, obviously … especially podcasting.

  1. When my family streams music, we’re still mostly listening to some small webcasters. We occasionally stream You Tube, mostly for TV/video clips.
