On the Move: Sony edition

On the Move tracks hires, promotions, and other notable personnel changes within the online audio industry.

Sony Music Entertainment announced a shift in its top executive tier. Rob Stringer will move into the role of CEO for the music division from his post as Chairman and CEO of Columbia Records. He replaces Doug Morris, who will take on the position of Sony Music chairman in April 2017. “As someone who has spent his entire career at Sony Music, it is a tremendous honor to be named CEO,” Stringer said of the promotion. “This is a time of enormous opportunity and change for the music business. I am excited to work with the great team we have built at Sony Music to continue to be a champion for artists, and further adapt and grow the business as we meet the challenges ahead.” Morris’ CEO tenure included recent growth for Sony Music, with streaming gathering a greater share of the company’s profits.

Sony’s music publishing arm is also the source of some personnel changes. Brian Monaco has been named to a new role of President, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Sony/ATV Music Publishing. His previous position was executive VP, worldwide head of advertising, film, and television. Monaco shared his vision for the branch with Billboard. “We want to drill down globally on how to be a better sales group as synch becomes more and more important in every aspect of the publishing world,” he said. “We’d like to see double-digit growth in three-to-five years in ex-U.S. territories.”
