“Despacito” becomes first YouTube video to break 5 billion views

Last year was unquestionably the year of “Despacito,” as the Spanish-language track by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee broke records and won fans all around the world. And it isn’t done with the record-breaking. The official music video for the song has surpassed 5 billion views on YouTube, the first to ever reach that milestone.

This latest record doesn’t even capture the full breadth of “Despacito” fever. There’s another official video with a guest verse provided by Justin Bieber. That remix version has 7.6 million views as of press time.

Music has a strong history of topping the YouTube charts. Before “Despacito” took the crown in August, the most-viewed YouTube video was “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth. Before that, the long-standing champion was another international hit: Psy’s “Gangnam Style.”
