Amazon acquires podcast.com and podcasting.com

In a blockbuster domain acquisition which indicates strategic purpose, Amazon has acquired the domains podcast.com and podcsting.com, we learned from Podnews. The DomainInvesting website is a source for this news, and notes that the domains lead to the Audible landing page for podcasts. Podnews rightly observes that Audible trafficks in original podcasts only, not public ones, which stretches the conception of podcasting outside of the usual definition of RSS distribution.

The podcaster.com URL does not resolve to a website at this time. It is registered to MarkMonitor, a domain consulting and security company — sometimes a signal of domain ownership by a major brand.

Audible recently altered and simplified its subscription plans, offering the “Audible Plus” subscription to the company’s entire catalog of audiobooks and podcasts. In that maneuver, and considering the company’s indifference to the traditional podcast catalog and definition, it seems like Amazon-owned Audible is creating a unique category definition and experience of audio storytelling. Acquiring podcast.com and podcasting.com domains, is a virtual real estate grab.
