Spotify expected to launch in South Africa soon

Spotify is expected to roll out in South Africa later this month. The streaming service is hosting a press event on March 13 when it is expected to formally announce the expansion. The first indication of Spotify’s interest in South Africa came with a job listing posted in September 2017 for a senior editor/music programmer to be responsible for that region.

If and when it does launch, Spotify will face competition from several other international streaming services. Google Play Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Joox are all available in South Africa, as are local music options such as Simfy Africa. International expansion was named as a key strategy in Spotify’s direct public listing documents, and the progress in that business move may be what pushed it to make bigger strides into South Africa.
