RAIN Summit Indy to present vital copyright issues

rain summit indy 300 x 250In what most observers regard as a crucial year for music licensing, copyright, and royalties, RAIN Summit Indy will face the issues head-on with a panel of experts to demystify the complexities and throw light on the issues. The conference will be held on September 9 at the Indiana Convention Center. RAIN Summit Indy is a partner event of The Radio Show.

The Royalty Reset session will discuss the potential impact on the Internet radio industry of possible changes to the U.S. music-licensing regulations. It comes at a time when, remarkably, nearly all parties involved (music rights owners, performing rights organizations, senators and members of congress, musicians) agree that current law is broken. But there is no accord on which parts need overhaul.

As the Copyright Royalty Board approaches the 2016-2020 royalty period, and the DOJ reviews compulsory licensing, this important session examines crucial music-licensing questions. Will broadcasters have to pay performance royalties? Will pre-1972 recordings be added to the Copyright Act? Will the ASCAP/BMI consent decrees be changed?

David Oxenford, broadcast law attorney and frequent contributor to RAIN News, recently called 2014 “The summer of copyright.” At summer’s end, RAIN Summit Indy will examine what changes are in the wind.
