Quick Hits: Digital Power Players; a defender for YouTube; get SoundCloud on vinyl

Brief news items and worthy reads from around the web:

Unsung streaming leaders land on Power Players list: Billboard has released its Digital Power Players list for 2016. The rankings represent the companies you’d expect from a roundup of the digital business, but the individuals highlighted are doing more behind the scenes. For instance, the Spotify representative isn’t CEO Daniel Ek, but chief strategy officer/chief content officer Stefan Blom. Apple Music has two leaders on the list: Larry Jackson, head of content, and Brooke Kain, head of digital marketing. Tidal CEO Jeff Toig and Amazon VP of Digital Music Steve Boom also got nods.

A pro-YouTube piece from Financial Times: With all the criticism against YouTube and the safe harbor situation, supporters of the video platform have been few and far between. The Financial Times, however, has published an article question the music industry attacks.

For the ultimate hipster, SoundCloud-to-vinyl pressings: In case SoundCloud’s digital audio formats are just too pristine for you, a new service promises to add a more analog experience. Vinylize.it is a startup that says it will press custom vinyl LPs or tracks or entire playlists from the audio platform. It will request permission from the artist(s) in question, then make a pressing of the music that will then be available to order. The service isn’t actually up and running yet, but it’s certainly a…unique concept.
