Live365 crosses border to Canada: “This is only the beginning of our expansion”

Live365, the venerable internet radio platform for webcasters at all levels, is now streaming in Canada. Licensing from SOCAN and Re:Sound enables the company to distribute in the U.S. neighbor.

A geo-block on the Live365 website has been removed for website streaming, and the company promises that mobile apps will follow in coming weeks.

“As copyrights are getting more complex, Live365 is committed to bringing webcasters’ coverage beyond the United States,” stated Jon Stephenson, CEO of Live365. “Canada is just the first of many countries where we will extend the Live365 service. We fully understand the value of providing a unique service to webcasters while ensuring artists and rights holders continue getting compensated properly for their works. This is only the beginning of our expansion.”

Live365 has, during the past two and a half years, been emblematic of the turbulent streaming industry for small and indie webcasters. The company, an industry pioneer, went out of business quickly after new webcast royalty rates established by the U.s. Copyright Royalty Board dramatically increased costs for streamers on all platforms. Almost exactly a year later, the brand and its service were revived by Jon Stephenson, head of Empire Streaming and Media Creek, Live365’s two parent entities.

  1. I was with Live365 from 2003 until the CRB iceberg. I’d love to come back but it’s way too expensive for a side project. Plus, all that $ and you don’t get past northern North America?

    • My Live365 stream has listeners in Germany, United States, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Japan, Finland, Norway, and now Canada.

  2. After looking at a number of the blog articles on your site, I seriously like your way of blogging. I added it to my bookmark webpage list and will be checking back in the near future.
